Flour Power

In the interest of maximizing cargo space on Berlin Airlift aircraft, flying bags of flour into the city was an example of mission efficiency, but not without its risks as flour can be highly flammable when dispersed in the air. The Berlin Airlift flew more than 640 tons of flour into the city every day during the mission – enough to make 1.4 million loaves of bread every day. (USAF photo)

Team Effort for the Berlin Airlift

End of the Blockade

The determination of the people did not falter. Berliners and USAFE personnel supporting the Berlin Airlift crowd around to view the ceremonies commemorating the End of the Berlin Blockade in Germany on May 12, 1949. The end of the blockade didn’t halt the Berlin Airlift as leaders wanted to build up a stockpile of food and coal in the event the Soviets tried other means to contain Berlin later – plus the Berlin Airlift was so efficient that more supplies could be flown into the city in a day than could be transported in by other means. Clarence the Camel on Tour

Children in Heidelberg - donned in their best Halloween costumes - were eager to pet Clarence the Camel, the mascot of the pilots of the 86th Fighter Group and donate some of their candy to the children of Berlin, so Clarence could ferry the candy to the blockaded city on his own C-47 Operation Vittles flight. The camel was the mascot for Operation Vittles - also known as the Berlin Airlift - as people would deposit gifts and candy for the Berlin children in the camel's saddlebags during football games on the 86th Neubiberg Air Base, as well as other events across West German U.S. bases. Last USAF flight of the Berlin Airlift

By spring 1949, the operation to supply Berlin was working so efficiently that, on some days, more goods were flown into the city than had arrived before the blockade by road, water, and rail combined. The continuing positive reporting on Allied tonnage and the growing reputation of the Western powers were certainly part of the reason for the lifting of the Soviet blockade on May 12, 1949. Despite the end of the blockade, the Airlift continued until Sept. 30, 1949. The historical events known as the “Berlin Blockade” and the “Berlin Airlift” are thus chronologically not wholly identical.
