End of the Blockade

The determination of the people did not falter. Berliners and USAFE personnel supporting the Berlin Airlift crowd around to view the ceremonies commemorating the End of the Berlin Blockade in Germany on May 12, 1949. The end of the blockade didn’t halt the Berlin Airlift as leaders wanted to build up a stockpile of food and coal in the event the Soviets tried other means to contain Berlin later – plus the Berlin Airlift was so efficient that more supplies could be flown into the city in a day than could be transported in by other means. The Berlin Airlift ended on Sept. 30, 1949.(USAF Photo)
