A Christmas Gift from Irving Berlin

As a way of showing his support for the servicemembers participating in the Berlin Airlift, the American songwriter, Irving Berlin, wrote a song especially for them called “Operation Vittles.” During the “Christmas Caravan” show at the Wiesbaden Opera House on Christmas Eve, 1948, the songwriter led a chorus of Airmen in performing the song. The lyrics to the song were published in the Task Force times, the Berlin Airlift newsletter so the crowd could sing along. (Courtesy Photo)
