Historical highlights: How 9/11 reshaped USAFE’s mission

U.S. Air Forces in Europe Airmen and NATO Allies respond in the days and months following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The attacks prompted increased force protection measures across USAFE installations and marked a significant shift in the command’s operational focus as Airmen and aircraft supported U.S. operations in the Global War on Terror. Twenty-five years later, USAFE-AFAFRICA remembers the 2,977 people killed on Sept. 11 and the service members who lost their lives in the operations that followed.
