Pig Fest

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany – A man pours juice over a roasting pig Aug. 18 for hungry festival goers to enjoy during the annual Pig Fest in Wittlich. In addition to roasting pigs, the annual bash that attracts people from all over Germany and further offers a huge amusement park with several carnival rides, music and live performances throughout the weekend and tons of shopping. According to legend, Wittlich was once a walled fortress constantly under attack by invaders. When a guard couldn’t find the peg to secure the fortified door, he used a carrot. A pig ate the carrot and the enemy marched through the gate and ransacked the town. The angry townspeople herded every pig into the town’s market square and roasted them. The fest was Aug. 18-20 with many Spangdahlem AB Airmen in attendance. (U.S. Air Force photo/Staff Sgt. Andrea Knudson)
