Conversations with a missing soldier
On one of the remote and particularly steep slopes of Monte Grappa, Italy, Austrian troops engineered a series of zig-zagged trenches in World War I. This photo illustrates the mountainous conditions the Italian and Austrian forces had to live and fight in. In the left center of the photograph is an Italian trench, which shows the tremendous amount of effort required to dig these protective earthworks from limestone. (Photo courtesy of Bill Harris)
