Guard provides USAFE with seamless airlift support
Rhode Island Air National Guard LoadmasterStaff Sgt. Joseph Maker performs preflight start-up on a C-130J an hour before departure from Ramstein Jan. 9. Because the newer aircraft design has eliminated flight engineers and navigators from the dedicated crew, the loadmaster assumes a few more additional duties than were previously expected of him in the older E-model C-130. Sergeant Maker and the entire crew from the 143d Airlift Wing at Quanset State Airport in Rhode Island belong to only one of four Air Guard units in possession of the new J-model 130 cargo plane.
