Airman receives Purple Heart

General Mark A. Welsh III, U.S. Air Force in Europe commander, pins the Purple Heart to Master Sgt. Ricky Willis, April 17, for wounds received in action Jan. 15, 2008. While performing a route reconnaissance mission for a combat logistics patrol in southern Baghdad, a command-wired improvised explosive device was deliberately detonated less than ten feet from Willis' position. Though he suffered from traumatic brain injury, Willis directed the convoy away from the attack site, performed and coordinated medical treatment of a wounded comrade, and provided dismounted security to the convoy.
