Airmen participated in the first "Troops on Trash" event Nov. 30, walking from Aviano Air Base's North Gate to South Gate, approximately three miles, collecting trash and separating glass, paper, aluminum and cardboard into separate trash bags.

Team Aviano adopted the "Troops on Trash" initiative to ensure the outside perimeter of the base was clear of litter, and as a way to build camaraderie amongst volunteers.

"Our hope is that the program benefits Italians and Americans alike," said Staff Sgt. Bryce Dick, "Troops on Trash" participant, who helped bring the program to Aviano. "We want to let the Italians know that we care about the look of the outside of the base as much as the inside."

According to Dick, the hope is to make this a monthly event where squadrons and organizations volunteer to clean up the base, allowing Airmen from different squadrons to participate in the initiative.

"I feel that keeping the outside of the base clean shows that we are cognizant of what harm can come from littering in our environment," said Staff Sgt. Olaf Moore, event participant. "I hope that 'Troops on Trash' helps people realize the importance of recycling and volunteering."

As guests of a host nation it is the responsibility of Team Aviano members to always properly dispose of trash and recycle. It shows the host nation that their laws and concerns are being followed and being taken seriously.
