Phase inspections are completed every 400 flying hours to ensure jets remain mission-ready. Phase inspections require crew members to disassemble and reassemble all critical aircraft components to ensure they are running properly. During a phase inspection, the plane is de-paneled, the functions are tested and hydraulic, flight control and avionics components are inspected. Once an airframe is deemed safe and operational by the phase flight, the jet is reassembled and returned to the fighter squadron.
