There’s a secret that’s fading away at one of the fitness centers here.

By word of mouth, parents are learning of the Parents and Kids Room located in Ramstein’s South Side Fitness Center.

“This is one of our busiest rooms ... in this facility, and this is the only one of its kind in USAFE,” said Facility Director Isaac Melendez.

Previously the room was a racquetball court accommodating two to four people. Utilizing the self help program, the fitness staff changed the room into an exercise area teaming with parents and children. Approximately 150 people use the room a day.

“As soon as I discovered it (the fitness room) I started coming,” said Winnoa Lara a dependant spouse and frequent patron of the workout area.

“I come here just as often as I can, morning or afternoon,” added Winnoa, who brings two of her daughters here while the third is in school. “ When I first saw this fitness room I thought it was too good to be true, but here it is.”

The room, filled with enough cardio equipment and strength machines for 11 parents to work out, also provides a play area where kids have access to games, books and DVDs.

“Parents didn’t have anywhere to go with their children to workout and keep an eyeball on them,” said Mr. Melendez. “This is (an) outlet to reduce stress and make you feel better about yourself. It’s definitely an improvement in the quality of life.”

Lisa Altman, a first-time visitor to the Parents and Kids room, couldn’t agree more.

“I am very happy to be able to bring my son with me here,” said the mother of eight-week-old Aaron, as she works out on a cross trainer and he sits next to her in a baby carrier.
