USAFE commander visits Lajes Published July 20, 2006 By Staff Sgt. Marcus McDonald 65th Air Base Wing Public Affairs LAJES FIELD, Azores, Portugal (USAFENS) -- The commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and his command chief visited here July 18-19. Throughout their stay, Gen. Tom Hobbins and Chief Master Sgt. Gary Coleman met with Lajes Airmen at various facilities and venues. Their schedule included stops at the flightline, the Top of the Rock Club, and they also took time to videotape an AFN commercial. General Hobbins thanked Lajes for their contributions in supporting the Global War on Terrorism. "USAFE is moving fast and furious and Lajes is a part of that," the general said. "Your mission here of moving people and communications into or out of the fight is critical to our success as a command. What you do here to support the war effort is very important," he said. "Lajes is truly in the fight and we appreciate your contribution." General Hobbins said accolades come to Lajes because of its people. "You have a great leadership team here," General Hobbins said. "Lajes gets a lot of recognition because you're just that great." Following a helicopter ride above the island, the general encouraged Lajes Airmen to enjoy their assignment here. "This is a beautiful island," he said. "Take the time to enjoy it while you're assigned to Lajes Field." Chief Coleman showcased the new Airman Battle Uniform during the first day of the two-day visit. "You'll really like this new uniform," the chief said. "It looks great and it's as comfortable as an old football jersey or a night shirt. Whether you're at home station or on a deployment, this will be the only uniform you'll need." The chief also addressed the Air Force's efforts to right-size the force. "We're at war and it's a challenging time for both USAFE and the rest of the Air Force," he said. "We're having to make some tough decisions in regard to personnel cuts. If you're identified as being in an overage AFSC, take advantage of the retraining opportunities available as soon as possible." Chief Coleman told the Airmen to keep driving forward. "This is a marathon we're in," he said. "It's not a sprint. Be sure to pace yourself and work together as a team so we can all finish strong." General Hobbins thanked Lajes Airmen for their service to the Air Force and nation. "It's a great team that we belong to," he said. "Each and every one of you should be proud to be Airmen in today's Air Force. I'm proud to serve with you."
