Saving time -- it is a topic on everyone's mind due to manpower cuts and increasing responsibilities.

Members of three Spangdahlem Air Base squadrons meet for a week to discover way to streamline the approach used for micro purchases of commodities and services.

The Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st Century involved the coordination of the 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron, 52nd Contracting Squadron and 52nd Logistics Readiness Squadron which resulted in a decision to establish a CONS/LRS help desk and a HazMat store by October.

"This will allow for real-time business advice and one on one customer service," said 2nd Lt. Amanda DeLancey, 52nd CONS contract specialist. "It will also allow for CONS and base supply to provide a more efficient and effective way of getting the customer what they want, with less lead time. Another major focus will be on a HazMat Store. This will be a "one stop shop" that will provide pick-up and delivery of Hazardous Materials as well as, centralized storage."

Since more than one squadron was involved in the process many perspectives were brought to the table.

"This was the first time in my four years here that CE, LRS and CONS personnel have been sequestered for a week to develop more streamlined ways to conduct business and work as a team," said Master Sgt. Ohaji Yarborough, 52nd CONS Civil Engineering Support Flight chief. "We had to understand each other's processes and develop a solution agreeable to all parties."

After days of analyzing the micro purchase process it was discovered that the average purchase order took 46 steps to be completed.

"This plan will affect the entire 52nd Fighter Wing," Lieutenant DeLancey said. "Every squadron will benefit from such things as a higher level of customer service, less lead time, a reduction in product costs and an overall increase in customer satisfaction."
