More than 200 runners participated in the first-ever Aviano Marathon and multi-distance run events. The marathon kicked off at 8 a.m. on Saturday, following opening comments from 31st Figther Wing commander, Brig. Gen. Craig Franklin. The run events included a full marathon, full marathon relay race, half marathon, 10K and 5K run/walks.

It was a tremendous team effort in organizing and directing this event, from the mission support group planning committee and the entire fitness staff to SFS, MDG, CS, CES, AFN and of course the many race-day volunteers.

Planners were extremely pleased with the support they received from across the wing and they received lots of great comments from the runners.

Everyone enjoyed the marathon course and the post race refreshments were a big hit. Most every unit was represented and there was even one all-female team from 31st Security Forces Squadron which finished the marathon team event in 2:36:55.

And, in case you were wondering how our featured runners from the Oct. 12 edition of the Vigileer did, Capt. James Montgomery and his daughter Miranda both completed the half marathon in two hours and 52 minutes. Captain Montgomery stated that this was the first half-marathon race for him and his daughter.

"We both enjoyed the course, the music and the festivities," he said.

Congratulations go out to all the runners. Completing a marathon or half-marathon is an exceptional accomplishment. Aviano's first marathon provided an exceptional springboard for future Aviano marathons. The hope is to build on this one and make next year's marathon event ever bigger and better. It's currently scheduled for 20 September 2008.
