Sports figures are often seen as parallels to excellence and leadership, and an Airman from U.S. Air Forces in Europe is demonstrating both since earning a position on the Armed Forces Women's Soccer Team.

Capt. Amy Zwiers, executive officer, USAFE Warrior Preparation Center, was among the best of more than 100 applicants for the U.S. team that will compete in the 2009 Conseil International du Sport Militaire International Women's Soccer Championship hosted by Keesler AFB, Miss., June 6-13.

"Competition was tough," said Captain Zwiers. Only 18 of the 45 active duty ladies that received invitations to Trial Camp made the final roster. "Everyone had to show up fit and focused."

The six other national military teams competing this year are from Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, The Netherlands, and The Republic of South Korea.

"Getting to represent the U.S. and our Armed Forces and compete at the international level is an amazing opportunity," said Captain Zwiers. "I'm extremely grateful for the support my Air Force leadership has given me."

Supporting the captain seemed to be a natural choice for her commander.

"This is a positive position for the Air Force and DOD at large," said Col. Scott Manning, USAFE WPC, commander. "Captain Zwiers will represent sportsmanship in the U.S. and the quality of individuals we have in uniform.

"She's a tremendous officer who brings the intensity of her soccer performance into the office," Colonel Manning continued. "She challenges everyone to be better, and with that example people stepped up to do a little more so she could represent the U.S."

Being a member of a local sports club helped the captain be ready for her chance at international competition.

"I play soccer for a local German Club," said Captain Zweirs. "The German style is different ... and trainers have definitely helped me to become a more well rounded player.

"I also do PT with my unit three times a week and run with my husband (Capt. Scott Zwiers)."

The captain encourages service members to take advantage of the positive activities around them.

"There are so many opportunities in the KMC (Kaiserslautern Military Community) area, just pick something you like doing and get out there!" proclaimed Captain Zwiers. "The Services staff we have in the KMC area are always eager to help out and provide resources and information."
