YTL conversion to TL almost complete Published Dec. 22, 2009 By Senior Airman Alex Martinez 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, the "New Turkish Lira" and "New Kurus" currencies will no longer be accepted. On Jan. 1, 2009, the Government of Turkey changed the name and look of its paper and coin currencies to simply the "Turkish Lira" and "Kurus," allowing one year before the "New Turkish Lira" and "New Kurus" would no longer be accepted. For members of the Incirlik community, there is no need to worry if they find "New Turkish Lira" in their possession after the New Year. "The cashier's cage of the 39th Comptroller Squadron will exchange the old currencies for the new ones if you bring it into our office during business hours," said Maj. Joseph Schaefer, the 39th CPTS commander. "We will continue to exchange Turkish Lira for dollars only if you are a few days away from PCSing." The cashier's cage will exchange the currencies for as long as Turkey does, which is until Dec. 31, 2019. The currencies being ousted can be identified by markings of the word "Yeni", meaning "new". The new, permanent currencies are not marked with "Yeni", and say "Turk Lirasi". For more information, contact Tech. Sgt. Dave Graham, 39th CPTS, at 676-3204.
