Ramstein runs for Haiti

RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany --  Team Ramstein did not let inclement weather stop them from running hard to raise money for disaster relief operations in Haiti with a 5K run Feb 5. here.

The Company Grade Officers Council and the 450th Intelligence Squadron Booster Club sponsored the Help for Haiti 5K which raised more than $8,000.

"Our main goal was to raise awareness and funds for Haiti," said Staff Sgt. Vince Newland, 450th IS imagery intelligence program manager and main coordinator for the run. "Anything we can do to help out with the disaster will benefit them."

The Haiti earthquake struck over a month ago, but this was the first official fundraiser Ramstein has held.

"When we brought up the idea of doing a run to help raise money for Haiti, everyone was very excited," said Capt. Mindy Black, 450th IS mission management flight commander. "It was a high priority for everyone. We want people to know the Kaiserslautern Military Community has high priority for people throughout the world and helps those in need wherever they may be. We as servicemembers have to be part of a group that is socially aware and have the heart to help.

Though the run was put together quickly, this did not stop KMC members came out in full force.

"We have more than 200 people who showed up today, and have raised over $8,000 in relief for Haiti," Sergeant Newland said.

There were many in attendance from spouses to children and even pets, banding together to show support for a greater cause by running or walking.

For some, the reasons for participating hit home harder than others.

"Both of my parents are missionaries in Haiti," said Heather Gray, a participant in the run. "They were both there when the earthquake hit. They were able to get out, but my dad has gone back since then, so I have decided to run today. I am not a runner, but this really means something to me to be out here."

From Air Force to Army, KMC members continued to do what they do best during a time of need -- help.

"This is a great Team Ramstein effort," said Brig. Gen. Mark Dillon, KMC and 86th Airlift Wing commander. "Air Force and Army, active duty and reserves, military and civilians have joined together for a great cause. It's amazing how Americans come together to help out our Haitian brothers and sisters. Despite the rainy weather, everyone had a great attitude."
