Local youth semi-finalist in national contest

ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England --  The daughter of a 48th Fighter Wing Airman has been named a semi-finalist for the 2012 Military Child of the Year.

Alexandra DeYonke, daughter of Lt. Col. John DeYonke, 48th FW Wing Plans chief, is currently a high school senior attending the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

"When I found out I was nominated for it I was real excited," Alexandra said, "and when I heard I was a semi-finalist I was even more excited."

The Military Child of the Year Award is given by Operation Homefront. Candidates are selected by demonstrating resilience and strength of character in the face of the challenges of military life.

"The sons and daughters of America's service members learn what patriotism is at a very young age," said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of Operation Homefront. "Children in military families understand sacrifice and live with the concept of service. This is what the Military Child of the Year Award honors."

Among the accomplishments that led to Alexandra's nomination were serving as a Red Cross volunteer coordinator during summer vacation, overseeing 30 youth volunteers. She also acts as a lead for her school's online learning system, making sure students who take courses from home keep up with their work.

"I guess it's something I'm more equipped for because my dad has been deployed several times throughout my life so it makes it easier for me to get on their level," Alexandra said.

DeYonke said he couldn't be prouder of his daughter.

"She's taken advantage of all the opportunities she's been offered," he said. "It's great to see that internal motivation at such a young age."

The award winners from each branch of the military will be announced March 8.
