Turkey will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of joining NATO Feb. 18.

In 1949, twelve nations signed the North Atlantic Treaty, a document forged to ensure freedom and security of its member countries through political and military functions. Feb. 18, 1952, Turkey made its mark on the treaty, as well, adding to the now 28 members of the organization.

"It's an honor to be a part of an organization that has supported NATO and Turkish operations for nearly 60 years," said Col. Chad Butts, 39th Air Base Wing vice commander.

U.S. service members in Turkey play a significant role in cooperation between the U.S., NATO and Turkey, as the 39th Air Base Wing and its geographically-separated units support and protect U.S. and NATO resources and people within Turkey.

"Close to many of the world's potential trouble spots, Incirlik is an important base in NATO's Southern Region," states the wing's mission factsheet. The wing and associated units help "protect U.S. and NATO interests in the Southern Region by providing a responsive staging and operational air base ready to project integrated, forward-based air power."

At the height of the Cold War, membership was concurrently granted to Turkey and Greece, which was the first expansion of the Alliance since its creation.

"Turkey and Greece have greatly contributed to Alliance security during six decades, guarding NATO's southern flank during the Cold War and, today, addressing new challenges such as violent extremism, or contributing to missile defence and stabilizing Afghanistan," states a NATO news release observing the anniversary.

The release also states "their contribution is just as valuable today as in 1952, the guarantee of collective defence has the same resonance as 60 years ago."

The Republic of Turkey Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoes that sentiment as the MFA website declares, "the North Atlantic Alliance has played a central role in Turkey's security and contributed to its integration with the Euro-Atlantic community. Turkey, in return, has successfully assumed its responsibilities in defending the common values of the Alliance. ... The success of current and future missions and operations will play a crucial role in shaping NATO's future. Turkey will continue to provide appropriate support to these operations."
