Little shadows follow Airmen

ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England --  More than 500 students from RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell schools were given the opportunity to be part of an educational experience during the Department of Defense Dependents Schools' Job Shadow Day April 27, 2012.

During the day, a variety of work centers across RAFs Lakenheath, Feltwell and Mildenhall were open to students to demonstrate military and civilian careers in action. There were 17 different sessions set up at RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell, and another eight sessions set up at RAF Mildenhall.

"This day exposed children to possible future careers and connected what children learn at school with the actual working world," said Megan Fraser, 48th Mission Support Group dependent school liaison assistant. "It also provided them an opportunity to share how they envision the future and helped them discover the power and possibilities associated with a balanced work and family life."

A few of the sessions offered included demonstrations from the fire department, military working dogs, birds of prey and static displays of aircraft, which were a big hit to some of the students.

"I really liked learning about the planes, missiles and helicopters," said Asia Tague, a Feltwell Elementary School student. "I think my favorite part of Job Shadow Day though was getting to be with my mom, dad and brother for the day."

Students were able to attend up to six sessions during the day and the events were also open to home school children. According to Fraser, Job Shadow Day achieved its aim.

"Job Shadow Day can help students demonstrate how their interests relate to achieving personal, social, educational and career goals," said Fraser. "Overall, Job Shadow Day was a success with a large turnout of students that really enjoyed themselves."
