U.S. officials brief ROB medical center project at Mayors' Forum Published May 21, 2013 By Capt. William Russell USAFE - AFAFRICA Public Affairs RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany -- U.S. military and German officials met during the Kaiserslautern Military Community's bi-annual Mayors' Forum at the Kaiserslautern County Commissioner's office May 15. During the forum, U.S. military officials and civilian attendees, including the Kaiserslautern County Commissioner and several mayors, discussed a variety of topics affecting the KMC community. However, most discussion focused on the Rhine Ordinance Barracks Medical Center project. Lalit Wadhwa, U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Chief of Programs, said that an open dialogue with German partners is invaluable. "The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers appreciates the opportunity to update the mayors on the design and construction of this critical project," said Wadhwa. "We will continue to work closely with all out host nation partners to deliver this vital facility expeditiously." The new medical facility, which will be located on the Weilerbach portion of Rhine Ordnance Barracks, will replace the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Ramstein Air Base Clinic upon completion, due to the aging infrastructure of the two facilities. The new facility will serve as a centralized trauma and medical care facility for U.S. wounded warriors, service members and family members throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. The project is currently undergoing an environmental public coordination process. When the process is completed (expected in late 2013 or early 2014) construction of the medical facility will commence starting with site and infrastructure preparation. The estimated time of completion for the new facility is in 2022.
