Lajes fuels PoAF's Azores search and rescue mission
An EH-101 Merlin helicopter, ready for emergency and medical responses, in an aircraft hangar at Lajes Field, Azores. The Portuguese Air Force utilizes this aircraft to conducts search and rescue missions as well as medical evacuations throughout the Azores islands. Only two of the nine islands, Terceira and Sao Miguel, have major hospitals. PoAF search and rescue missions transport people from other islands to the nearest hospital, often responding to women entering labor or people experiencing a health problem or a disabled vessel on the ocean.
