USAFE/AFAFRICA leadership challenges Team Incirlik, lauds Turkish Air Force
by 1st Lt. David Liapis
39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs
12/3/2012 - INCIRLIK AIR BASE, Turkey -- United States Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Commander Gen. Philip M. Breedlove and Command Chief Master Sgt. Craig A. Adams visited here Nov. 28 and 29 to interact with Airmen and gain first-hand knowledge of the current state of the 39th Air Base Wing and its partnership with the Turkish Air Force.
Breedlove discussed his goals for the visit. "I really want to meet Airmen, shake their hands and find out what's on their minds," he said. "I also want to make contact with the new 10th Tanker Commander. It's important to continue that strong relationship with our Turkish hosts."
In addition to stressing the importance of maintaining a good relationship with the United States' NATO partner, Breedlove praised the professionalism and skills of the TURAF.
"The Turkish military is an incredibly capable military. Their F-16s are flown professionally, have magnificent capability, and their tankers do great work," said Breedlove.
The general also explained his vision for the Air Force and challenged Airmen to become more proactive in fighting sexual assault and suicide during a wing All Call.
"What I really want you to do is think offense versus defense and prevent these things from happening," he said. "We can't afford for people inside our ranks to prey on others inside our ranks. To get on the front side of this problem, I need your help."
Breedlove continued, "I talk a lot about 'Every Airman a Sensor' in that respect. When I say 'Every Airman a Sensor,' that's big 'A' Airman - that's our enlisted corps, our officer corps, and our civilians and contractors - the whole team wrapped together."
Breedlove discussed how all Airmen must have the courage to say something when they see a bad situation or trend developing.
"Step out, be bold and have some guts. Do something before we have a tragedy," he said. "As it relates to suicide, intervene. As it relates to sexual assault, I believe many of us know who those predators are amongst us. We have to have the guts to reach out and stop them before they do something bad."
Breedlove also challenged first sergeants, chiefs and supervisors to "get out from behind the desk" and make face-to-face interaction with Airmen a top priority.
"This is a contact sport," said Breedlove. "A well-built slide presentation may or may not help an Airman, but standing face-to-face definitely will."
Adams reiterated the commander's message of looking out for the well-being of all Airmen and added his own personal challenge to the men and women of the 39th ABW.
"Be ready, stay focused and take care of yourselves and your families. Do your best every day."
