11/15/2011 - ROYAL AIR FORCE FELTWELL, England -- The six-year, $250 million housing project across Royal Air Forces Lakenheath and Feltwell is now officially complete.

The last of 68 new houses to be constructed on Feltwell was turned over to the Housing Office for assignment Nov. 14, one month ahead of schedule.

"It took a successful partnership to make these projects work," said Jason Flatt, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron project manager, who noted the cooperation across multiple agencies including the Defense Infrastructure Organization, Air Force Center of Engineering and the Environment, 48th CES, and Mansell's.

In an effort to make the new houses on Feltwell as modern and efficient as possible, solar panels have been installed to assist in heating water.

"They should reduce heating bills by 10 percent," said Ian Lancaster, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron chief of facilities.

The final house will be occupied by Staff Sgt. Thomas Lewellen, 48th Component Maintenance Squadron aircraft fuels systems craftsman and his family.

Lewellen noted that this will be the first new house he's moved into since he joined the Air Force six years ago. His three sons, meanwhile, were more excited at the prospect of having their own rooms for the first time.

"It's huge," Lewellen said after touring his new house with his wife and three sons. "There's a lot of space, which is definitely needed with this many children."

With construction on Feltwell complete, the local workers will be moving on to other projects, but they will remember their time working on the bases.

"We're very happy about the work we've done," said Andy Harris, site manager for Mansell's. "It's been a pleasure working here."

Sergeant Frost - the 250 million figure is accurate for this housing project that encompassed both RAFs Lakenheath and Feltwell over six years. The project has seen the construction of more than 600 homes for our military families. The 68 located at Feltwell are the last to be completed.

250 Million for 68 homes. That is well over three and a half million per home. Please tell me that there has been a gigantic math error and that the number was either for 680 homes or that the cost was 25 million dollars. If the numbers are true then I know how the military can easily cut ten percent from it's budget without impacting flying hours.

A little history - In 1967-68 while stationed at RAF Mildenhall, RAF Feltwell housed many Mildenhall Airman in WWII vintage barracks. We would hop the fence and get fish and chips at the shop in the Village.
