Colonel CALVIN B. POWELL

Colonel Calvin B. Powell is the Vice Commander, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing (EUCOM) and 435th Air Expeditionary Wing (AFRICOM), Ramstein Air Base, Germany. These specialized wings provide battlefield and expeditionary Airmen to combatant commanders and are capable of responding to humanitarian and contingency operations throughout the world. The two wings are comprised of 5 groups, 22 squadrons, and more than 2,300 personnel at 15 installations across Europe and Africa. Specific areas of wing expertise include tactical air control-party, battlefield weather, air base opening & operations, command & control, aerial port, aircraft maintenance, civil engineering & theater construction, base defense & security, theater C4I & combat communications, expeditionary air base operations, personnel recovery, tactical airlift, and intelligence, surveillance, & reconnaissance.

Colonel Powell received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1998. Following pilot training, he served two flying assignments in the F-15C and an assignment as an Air Liaison Officer. During this time, he participated in Operations Northern Watch, Southern Watch, Noble Eagle, Noble Endeavor, and Iraqi Freedom. Colonel Powell transitioned to the MQ-9 and MQ-1B aircraft flying combat support for Operation Enduring Freedom, and later, was the Commander, 16th Training Squadron, Holloman AFB, New Mexico. In his previous assignment, Colonel Powell was the Chief of Staff of U.S. European Command’s Directorate of Plans, Policy, Strategy, and Capabilities (ECJ5/8), Stuttgart, Germany.

Colonel Powell is a Command Pilot with more than 2,500 hours in the MQ-9, MQ-1B, F-15C, T-38, and T-37.
