USAFE Members Receive Bronze Star
Maj. Gen. Mark Schissler, U.S. Air Forces in Europe director of the Plans, Programs and Analyses Directorate, presented the Bronze Star to three Airmen under his command here Feb. 14. The Bronze Star is awarded to a person in any branch of the military service who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces on or after Dec. 7, 1941, shall have distinguished himself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. USAFE Members Receive Bronze Star
Maj. Gen. Mark Schissler, U.S. Air Forces in Europe director of the Plans, Programs and Analyses Directorate, presents the Bronze Star to Maj. Robert Firman, USAFE Directorate of Plans, Programs and Analyses executive officer, Feb. 14, 2011, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Major Firman was deployed as the Regional Support Command-Capital commander, NATO Training Mission - Afghanistan and Combined Security Transition Command ? Afghanistan, from Feb. 28 to Aug. 28, 2010. While filling a billet normally reserved for an Army Combat Arms colonel, Major Firman led 138 combat operations throughout Kabul Province. He developed and implemented the Kabul Security Plan, partnering with the Afghan Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Interior to plan and execute the fastest growth phase for the Afghan National Security Forces since its inception. The Bronze Star is awarded to a person in any branch of the military service who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces on or after Dec. 7, 1941, shall have distinguished himself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. Antonio Castillo, USAFE Directorate of Plans, Programs and Analyses chief of the Geographically Separated Units and Activities management Branch, Feb. 14, 2011, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Colonel Castillo was deployed as the Regional Support Team-Capital commander, NATO Training Mission - Afghanistan and Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan, from Sept. 5, 2009 to March 3, 2010. He received the Bronze Star for being instrumental in supporting the Title 22 engineering and logistical requirements for more than 20,000 Afghan National Security Forces and U.S. personnel. Creating the RST-C from the ground up, Colonel Castillo led the execution of more than $39 million in engineering projects while performing in more than 100 combat missions and 30 dismount patrols throughout Kabul Province. The Bronze Star is awarded to a person in any branch of the military service who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces on or after Dec. 7, 1941, shall have distinguished himself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. David Sumera, USAFE Plans, Program and Analyses chief of the Europe and Eurasia Branch, Feb. 14, 2011, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. Colonel Sumera was deployed as the 380th Expeditionary Communications Squadron commander from July 12, 2009 to July 6, 2010. He received the Bronze Star for providing leadership to the second largest communications site in the U.S. Air Forces Central area of responsibility, generating 6,300 combat sorties directly supporting 3,500 events of troops-in-contact with the enemy. He ensured continuous communications were available throughout the AOR with providing support and connectivity to various aircraft. The Bronze Star is awarded to a person in any branch of the military service who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S. Armed Forces on or after Dec. 7, 1941, shall have distinguished himself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy.
