Coalition forces train with partners in arms to enable CSAR readiness

CAMPIA TURZII, Romania -- Romanian air force special forces members use their nation’s combat search and rescue procedures to identify U.S. Air Force Capt. Maureen Hartney, 81st Fighter Squadron executive officer, as a survivor July 19 during a training mission a part of the Dacian Thunder exerise here. The 81st FS A-10 Thunderlbolt II pilots worked with Romanian air force IAR helicopter pilots to locate and safely rescue Hartney in this mission. Dacian Thunder is a month-long partnership building exercise in which the U.S. Air Force, Romanian air force, U.S. Marine Corps and the Royal Air Force exchange techniques, tactics and procedures to strengthen coalition and joint capabilities. Maj. Gen. Mark R. Zamzow

Maj. Gen. Mark R. Zamzow, Third Air Force vice commander and European Command’s military representative to the United Kingdom, has played a role in many of the Air Force’s most notable missions, learning valuable lessons along the way with regard to leadership, training and coalition relationships. A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Zamzow served for just more than 34 years as a heavy aircraft pilot, staff officer and commander. He is is set to retire in June with full faith in the future of his Air Force, declaring it one of the world’s greatest institutions.

aj. Gen. Margaret Woodward has been taking time from her whirlwind schedule lately to reflect on the achievements of her unit and her time at Ramstein. With the pending inactivation of the 17th Air Force (Air Forces Africa) April 20, the general has kept up the command’s obligations as the air component for U.S. Africa Command, visiting Ghana, Djibouti and Morocco in the last 30 days.
